Rotate motor to put the 'accurate' timing mark at 0°. If it's no where near the keyway get a white grease pen & make a new mark on the h.b. Check your harmonic balancer mark against this, if it's within a finger width your h.b. Get a mirror-on -a-stick & look at the main pulley, the keyway in the crank snout is damn near dead center on the timing mark. Rotate the dizzy until the rotor is pointed to #4.įinish assembly & make small dizzy adjustments until it starts, warm up fully & move to fine tuning. Then pop the distributor cap off & look inside, the plug wire contacts are labeled 1-2-3-4. You should have the lower timing belt pulley mark aligned with it's mark on the block & the upper timing belt pulley mark aligned (or within a tooth) with it's mark on' the backing plate. If you use anything other then the plug that fires on the timing mark you will have a reading that is off the timing gage!Īre we doing a tune up, or doing base timing on a just assembled rebuild? Which spark plug wire you use makes a HUGE difference! The plug wire clamp is what the timing light uses as I it's trigger to flash the light. If satisfied, reinstall the spark plugs, tighten the dizzy and let her rip.īring the engine up to full operating temp and correct / near correct idle speed. Now mark a new line on the balancer at the zero (0) mark of the timing tab. When successfully installed, you have about the same amount of space to the left and to the right in the dizzy adjustment slot. It might take 2-3-4 attempts to get the dizzy right. In other words, the dizzy shaft will rotate. When you reinstall, you will need to compensate the install because as you install the dizzy, the gear on the shaft will mesh with the cam and pull past the point of where it would be if you didn't have a gear on the shaft. If the rotor isn't within 1 gear tooth of perfect, remove the dizzy and reinstall. You might need to make reference marks on the edge of the dizzy body, etc to get the alignment of the rotor button to number 4. The rotor should be pointing at #4 electrode on the inside of the dizzy not the plug wire terminal on the outside. If you're satisfied you have it, you can now check the dizzy / rotor. If you feel confident finding #4 compression stroke TDC with the thumb, do it.ĭo it 2-3 times to get a good feel for it. My new one was off by 3* so I had to paint a new timing mark line on it. Even a new one can be off from the get go. If the balancer is of age and has slipped, it will probably continue to slip therefore, you might want to get a new one from JLEMOND. Once we establish that the motor is indeed on #4 compression stroke TDC, this will establish your timing mark on the balancer no matter where it falls. You can not use the balancer for those settings. If you need help getting the other stuff to match up, crank and cam timing marks, dizzy #4, holler. How damn high does your timing mark tab go? :shock: Have you tried the above and your getting 55*? Upon satisfactory timing, hold dizzy and carefully tighten hold down bolt. Turn the dizzy one way or other to advance / retard timing.Ĩ. Proper timing for your application is 6 degrees 800 rpm.ħ.
